Why I chose Michigan? I chose Michigan for a variety of reasons. I visited the department twice, once for the college of engineering's graduate symposium and once for recruitment, and I found the research interesting and I thought I would fit in well with the graduate students.
My current research at Michigan? I currently work under a large multidisciplinary research grant to convert microalgae into biofuels through hydrothermal liquefaction. My specific project is to examine the catalytic upgrading of model compounds found in a the bio-oil.
What's great about studying here? Ann Arbor is a great place to live. The city and university put on great events throughout the year (art fair, restaurant weeks, top of the park, sports events, IM sports, concerts, etc.) that there is always something to do. In addition, Ann Arbor is only 45 min from downtown Detroit where you can see larger concerts and pro sporting events. On the academic side, the university is great because we have access not only just about every piece of equipment you could ever want, but also there are experts in the field that can show you how to use them.
