Kotov wins Langmuir Lecture Award from ACS

Nick Kotov has won the 2013 Langmuir Lecture Award from the American Chemical Society (ACS).  He will deliver a plenary lecture in a special session of the Colloid and Surface Chemistry Division program at the 2013 Fall ACS National Meeting to be held in Indianapolis, Indiana.

PhD student's colorful 'hedgehogs' take top prize

Technicolor "hedgehogs" took the top prize in the Materials Research Society's Science as Art competition. Joong Hwan Bahng, a PhD student in Chemical and Biomedical Engineering under Nicholas Kotov, created the spiky spheres by growing bristles of zinc oxide on nanoparticles.

Barteau to be installed as first DTE Energy Professor

Mark Barteau, the director of Michigan's Energy Institute, will be installed as the Department of Chemical Engineering’s DTE Professor of Advanced Energy Research on April 25. The event will be held in the Johnson Rooms in the Lurie Engineering Center and will begin at 3 p.m. His lecture topic will be "Perspectives on Energy & Catalysis."

ChE undergraduate honored for entrepreneurial achievements

ChE senior, Carolyn Yarina, received the 2013 RPM Ventures Student Entrepreneur of the Year award.  She is the co-founder (with fellow ChE Alex Thinath) and CEO of CentriCycle, a non-profit startup dedicated to bringing appropriate, simple medical technology to rural India.

Bob Ziff recently had an article, "Getting the Jump on Explosive Percolation," published in the March 8 issue of Science. Percolation in random systems (like porous rock) refers to the ability of fluid to flow due to the existence of continuous long-range connected paths.

ChE senior, Carolyn Yarina, received the 2013 RPM Ventures Student Entrepreneur of the Year award for her startup venture, CentriCycle

Julia Faeth (Savage Lab), Jennifer Jocz (will begin U-M graduate program in fall), Lianette Rivera (Nagrath Lab) were selected as 2013 National Science Foundation Fellows

Lilian Hsiao (Solomon Lab) was awarded a Rackham Predoctoral Fellowship

Two ChE students have been named ChE Dow Sustainability Masters and Professional Degree Fellows: Chirapon (Pete) Wangwongwiroj,  a ChE undergraduate student who will be starting the energy systems engineering master’s this fall; Du Yu is a ChE master’s student.

Stacy Ramcharan (Lahann Lab) received a 2012 National Science Foundation Fellowship.

Christine Andres (Kotov Lab) was awarded the Intel PhD Fellowship for this fall. Fewer than 25 students nationwide are granted this fellowship.
Christine also received the College of Engineering’s Towner Prize for Distinguished Achievement.

Mike Nelson (Lin and Wang Labs) received a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Fellowship.

Peter Valdez (Savage Lab) was named an EPA Fellow.

Huanan Zhang (Kotov Lab) was awarded PI funding to attend the East Asia and Pacific Summer Institute, where he will serve as a guest researcher in China at Jiangnan University.

Andrew Schumacher, ChE junior, is featured in a Michigan Daily article about Michigan's Parkour Club.  Parkour, an extreme sport, is also considered a discipline and a philosophy.

Sita Syal, a junior in ChE, recently received a Udall Scholarship. This award is given to students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to the environment. Sita just completed a project in India comparing renewable energy in rural vs. urban settings in India.

Steve Edmund (Schwank Lab) was selected by Rackham Graduate School as an Outstanding GSI for 2012.  He will formally receive his award at a ceremony in April.

Indranil Saha Dalal (Larson Lab) was recently awarded the College's 2012 McIvor Award.

Nick Stuckert (Yang Lab) and Bobby Levine (Savage Lab) were named Rackham Predoctoral Fellows for 2012.
