John Mansfield Scholarship endowed

Rhonda Germany Ballintyn (BSE ChE ’79) and Nic Ballintyn have generously provided a gift to endow the John Mansfield Scholarship and support the H. Scott Fogler Award for Professional Leadership and Service Fund.

Rhonda Germany Ballintyn (BSE ChE ’79) and Nic Ballintyn have generously provided a gift to endow the John Mansfield Scholarship and support the H. Scott Fogler Award for Professional Leadership and Service Fund.  This gift qualified for the Bicentennial Opportunity Matching Initiative.

Established in honor of Dr. Mansfield’s scientific work in the field of materials science, the John Mansfield Scholarship will provide need-based support to undergraduate students in the College of Engineering who are first generation in their family to attend college.  Mr. and Mrs. Ballintyn desire that female students be selected for this distinguished scholarship, as part of their financial aid package.

As recipients of this support, the Mansfield scholars will receive special mentorship opportunities from the Ballintyn family and Dr. Mansfield to help them achieve great academic success.  The Ballintyns are passionate about supporting first-generation college students from low-income backgrounds, and they are excited to help the Mansfield scholars navigate the rigor of academia, so they can thrive at Michigan Engineering and in their future careers.  

In addition to endowing the scholarship fund, Mr. and Mrs. Ballintyn have directed a portion of their gift towards the H. Scott Fogler Award for Professional Leadership and Service Fund.  In honor of Professor Fogler’s global contributions and achievements in the field of chemical engineering, this award recognizes engineering faculty members with similar attributes and demonstrated successes. With their contribution, Mr. and Mrs. Ballintyn wish to honor Professor Fogler and his impact as an outstanding teacher and scholar.

Raised in Ypsilanti, MI, Rhonda Germany Ballintyn earned her undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering from the U-M, and later received a MBA from the University of Connecticut.  Mrs. Germany Ballintyn has over 35 years’ experience as a Board Director, C-Level Executive, and Management Consulting Partner and deep expertise in product development, marketing and strategy.

She recently retired as the Corporate Vice President, Chief Strategy and Marketing Officer for Honeywell International Inc., and currently serves on the Board of Directors for Aegion Corporation, Univar Corporation and UMUC Ventures. Mr. Ballintyn holds a BMAE and MME from the University of Delaware College of Engineering, and has worked in the development of orthopedic implants.  Mr. and Mrs. Ballintyn reside in Traverse City, Michigan. They have two sons, Benjamin, a recent graduate of University of Pennsylvania and a second year PhD student at Brandeis University in Computational Neuroscience, and Nate, a junior in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis.
