GSI positions may be available in additional courses and will be included in the call for applications.

Application procedure:

Applicants should submit the online application indicating their top three course choices, experience and/or reason for GSI-ing in a particular course and send a cover letter and resume to Colette SherfeyApplication deadline is May 31 (Fall term) and October 13 (Winter term).

Online GSI Application

Minimum qualifications: At least one and preferably two of the following,

  1. undergraduate degree in chemical engineering
  2. one year in chemical engineering graduate studies

Selection criteria will include (in addition to the above):

Academic performance, teaching or taking the same or similar course, previous performance as a GSI, fluency in written and oral English, interview with instructor, number of years as a graduate student. GSIs must be able to work through the end-of-term grading period. Qualified candidates may be interviewed by the faculty. The department will make selections based upon the above criteria.

Selection decisions for Winter term courses will be completed by July 30 (Fall) and November 15 (Winter).

General description of duties:

Lecture courses: teaching a discussion session, grading assignments, holding office hours
Lab courses: supervise laboratory section, grading assignments, holding office hours

Appointments will range between a 25% (10 hours/week) to 50% (20 hours/week). In addition, GSIs will receive full health benefits and tuition.

New GSIs are required to attend training courses offered by CRLT and the College of Engineering and a Chemical Engineering Department GSI workshop, which are held in late August/early September and early January. New GSIs must attend one ongoing professional development activity.   http://crlte.engin.umich.edu/  GSIs must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours.

Prospective graduate student instructors at the University of Michigan whose undergraduate education was at an institution in which the language of instruction is not English are required to pass the Graduate Student Instructor Oral English Test (GSI OET). GSI class size

In non-lab courses, the ratio is 25% GSI to max 60 students, except for ChE 466 and core graduate level courses, the ratio is 25% GSI to max 90 students. In lab courses, the ratio is 25% GSI to max 15 students.
