The Department of Chemical Engineering hosted an 80th birthday breakfast for Professor Scott Fogler on October 4, during Michigan Engineering Homecoming Weekend. Alumni, faculty and staff attended the party, where Susan Montgomery served as masters of ceremonies. She shared some alumni birthday wishes that came in from alumni for Scott and talked about the many contributions Scott has made to the department and the profession of chemical engineering.

There was a New Orleans-style breakfast for the guests at Scott’s request. As Montgomery explained, Scott attended the New Orleans School of Cooking, and not only completed the course, but sent in a photograph of a creole meal he cooked for family and friends upon his return, earning his Certificate. Scott is more proud of this honor than many of the others that he has received during his long career at Michigan.

The department was pleased to welcome Scott’s wife, Jan, and their son, Peter, with his partner, Lena, as special guests at the breakfast. One of the highlights of the morning was the cookies shared with the group that bore a remarkable likeness to the guest of honor (above).

At noon, the annual Luncheon with Alumni took place in the Lurie Engineering Center. Over 30 visiting alumni gathered in the Johnson Rooms for lunch with faculty and current students. Sharon Glotzer welcomed the returning quests before turning the podium over to Steve Hart, the guest of honor and recipient of the 2019 Alumni Merit Award. The guests received knit ChE hats from the department and were eager to wear them in the group photo!
